How can I stop a dog from barking at airplanes?

stop barking

We took in a 120 lb work mix last November. Since we are spending more time outside this summer, I noticed that he barks at airplanes. When he’d bark in the home at “virtually” nothing, I have now realized it is the airplanes flying overhead. (We are four miles from a small city airport)
Aside from moving, how can I get him to stop barking at them?
Telling him “no” just isn’t enough to get his attention.

Spray him with a water bottle and tell him “quiet.” When the barking stops, reward him with a treat.

first say “NO”, then if it conitues get a spray bottle and spray his face when he barks. it’s a little mean but it works.

I would try a citronella collar (available at most pet stores). When the dog barks it sprays a fine mist of citronella scented liquid into the air and dogs dont like the smell of it, so i dont think its cruel or anything. You could make him wear it all the time to eliminate all barking, or just for when you go outside. The dog will eventually associate barking with something not pleasant, so he should learn to not bark at the planes. Good luck! :)

well, bring some treats first. then when he starts barking, wait until he stops. then when he stops you say quiet and give him a treat then when he barks again wait again and when he stops you say quiet and give him a treat. do this maybe 4 times. then after awhile say quiet while he is barking and he should stop. he will eventually learn what quiet means . i hope i helped!!! good luck :-)

Shock collar…It may sound cruel but it doesn’t really harm the dog, will get the desired results, and keep from making enemies of your neighbors!!

I have found the best way to stop the barking is to make a loud noise that the dog does not like. For example, my poodle used to be quite barky, but now she almost never barks. I fixed this by clapping loudly or banging a pot everytime she barked. She hated the sound and would stop, startled. Everytime she stopped I would praise her and give her a little treat. Good luck!

You catch an airplane and bring it to the dog and show it that there is nothing to fear from it an thus no need to bark. Seriously, don’t listen to people that do not have any experience training dogs and suggest you shock, spray, or anything else that only works because the dog fears them. You want your dog to obey commands because it wants to, right? Obedience training. It will teach you about dog behavior and how to teach your dog. Once you have trained your dog in all the basic commands then you can teach it the “quiet” command. A big plus here is that now you have the tools to correct any future behavior problems. You will have a much better pet and a safer one. Not one that fears a spray bottle and you. Dogs have such short live anyway that I want to protect them from having to fear anything.
